THE YORKTOWN PRESS - May 20, 2010

Yorktown Roadrunners sports club to hit the ground running

YORKTOWN -- A new local sports club is getting off to a running start this summer.

Yorktown Roadrunners, a running club for youth entering grades 3-8, will give kids a chance for fun and fitness this summer.

The summertime program is open to boys and girls who live in or near Yorktown. All ability levels are welcome, including first-time runners.

"We are very excited about our inaugural season," Yorktown Roadrunners Director Kirk VanOoteghem said in a press release. "We have been busy working with local schools to promote the program and have received a very positive response. We have also been actively recruiting college interns, seeking input from area running coaches, and connecting with other running organizations.

"We will definitely have a solid, well organized, fun program in place when we begin meetings with our youth members in June."

The club's young members will meet for 15 weekly workouts, 7-8 p.m. Thursdays from the week of Memorial Day to the week of Labor Day.

A typical club meeting will include check-in and training log submission, warmups, running and/or walking, cool down, a lesson/discussion or activity and checkout.

In addition to weekly meetings, club members are encouraged to run/walk at least one other time each week on their own or with friends, and to keep track of all their time and/or distance and work to achieve personal goals.

A few Saturday outings throughout the summer are also planned, including a 5K challenge, a wilderness trail run/walk and other activities. The season will conclude with an awards ceremony honoring members for their participation and achievements.

The membership fee is $30 for the season, which includes a club T-shirt and participation award.

A sign-up/informational meeting for parents and guardians was held May 19, but anyone interested can still sign up online at www.YorktownRoadrunners.com.
